Our Origin Story

Australians For Uganda is a charity dedicated to delivering 100% of donations to communities in Uganda. Over the last two years, we have been providing donations to Ugandans in the Lira (Northern Uganda) community. Our hopes in forming this charity are to expand our pool of donors and thereby effect greater change on the ground in Lira. The charity was founded by Angus Hayes after he spent time in Lira for a medical rotation in the local hospital.

During this time, Angus forged relationships in the community which have provided a means to directly donate money to individual residents. Unlike many other charities, these relationships mean that 100% of donations make it into the hands of those who need them most.

Our other central, guiding feature is the publication of media detailing how your donation is spent. All donations are directed towards specific projects, the outcomes of which we are honoured to share with you on this platform. It is our hope that seeing first-hand the change a donation can bring about will encourage further donations and better outcomes for the residents of Lira.

Moses Fred Ogwal - Founding Member

Moses Ogwal is a pastor that lives in a small village to the North of Lira with his wife and children. In 2017, he welcomed Angus into his home, and the next 6 weeks was spent forging a close bond.

Moses has spearheaded many philanthropic projects within his region, and is a key part of the network which Aussies for Uganda relies on. Through Moses’ local ties, he is able to identify needs in his community and funnel funds to where they are needed most.

His list of projects is extensive, with examples including provision of food for his local village, to donating bikes to HIV+ children in his area, so that these children can travel into town to collect their anti-retroviral medications.

Lira District

Lira district is a province of Uganda located roughly 6 hours North of the capital Kampala.

The region has a population of around 100,000 people. Many of these residents struggle with poverty and low incomes. HIV is endemic in this area and many of the region’s inhabitants struggle with the disease.

Over the last two years, Australians For Uganda has been sending donations to a number of community members, some of which you can see the results of in our projects page.
